From a popular Brelish gossip rag:

Violence broke out at a House Ghallanda safe house last week, resulting in the untimely deaths of three very well-connected, very intoxicated guests and the near-banishment of a crystalline minstrel that identified itself as “Shale” and – surprise, surprise – Lyrandar heir Benedict Cumberbatch (a name too familiar to our regular readers). Survivors of the bloodbath report that after a drunken brawl involving Cumberbatch was pacified by an eladrin rustic called j’Hold and a ‘dark, translucent, winged creature’ at his command, ‘grotesque horrors’ appeared and began attacking guests. The sensational tales vary at this point, some involving a dragonborn mercenary, some involving little old ladies, all involving the sudden disappearance or disposal of said horrors. Sources tell us Ghallandan upper management is putting a big fat lid on this. Is this yet another favor Sivis’d in on behalf of that chronic calamity, Cumberbatch? Is Ghallandan hospitality heading to the Hells in a handbasket? Are these ‘horrors’ more symptoms of something sinister stirring across the continent? We’ll let you know more as the rumors roll in…

Session 02
Something Wicked Blah Blah Blah

The group traveled to Albridge, a town along the frontier, to escape attention from vengeful partys and to find House Orien smuggler Guy Deleuze, so he could guide the group safely to Benedict’s family headquarters, Stormholm, half a continent away. Inside the inn, the group encountered an out-of-place noble family: a silent grandmother, a stately man, and a friendly little girl.

After discussing payment for guiding the group to Stormholm, the town was attacked by zombies emerging from a ruined keep across the river, to which two airships were tethered.

The group fought and evaded the zombie horde towards the keep. Guy arrived first, was possessed by dark forces, and beckoned the grup to join him at the keep. The rest of the group closed the open magical gate in the keep floor from which the zombies were emerging, and then were paralyzed by the the dark power of the friendly little girl while she spewed black ichor into mouths and eyes. The stately man expressed his pride, then commanded a new guest (a man in dark priestly robes looking on in fear and awe) to complete his work in Winterhaven with haste. The girl, father, and priest boarded their airships and departed in separate directions.

The adventurers then blacked out.

What Goes Up...

The group departed from the massacred town of Albridge, leaving Guy Deleuze behind.

A township with a Lyrandar airship station was located, and the group finagled a luxury airship to continue their clandestine journey to Stormhome. A crew was hired to man the ship: two bugbears in the engine room, two crewman (Esteban and Carlos), a lookout/first mate (Hector), and a navigator/captain (Guillermo). It was decided that the long route away from large civilized areas was safest; this also took them towards Winterhaven, in order to track down the obviously-up-to-no-good priest. Perhaps he knows something about the group’s growing darkness within?

After a day of flying, the adventurers were attacked by Last-War-veterans-turned-raiders over the forests of Aundair, in the Nentir Vale, manning skysleds and a repurposed ironclad airship from the Last War. An airborne battle ensued, and the ironclad rammed the group’s airship, damaging it severely. Esteban, Hector, and the two bugbears died bravely. Just as the adventurers, as well as Captain Guillermo and the coward Carlos, were abandoning ship, a dragon with white and black coloring rose from the forest with its brood and struck the low-flying ships from flight, into the trees, where they exploded violently.

The adventurers are now stranded and separated from each other in the wilderness of Aundair’s Nentir Vale, in the territory of a hostile dragon and her brood.

Lost

shared dream

shale woken up by Carlos with water in the face. both go back to guillermo, finding the witch feeding on the captain. over a tense few moments, the witch agrees to stop feeding (she’s full) and shale brings guillermo back from the brink of death and stabilizes him.

the witch shares why she’s in the woods: she was travelling, fed on a dying child in nearby Winterhaven, was run out of town.

the group makes the difficult decision to not look for the rest of their party and head towards winterhaven as that was their original destination and would be the most likely place their lost party members would go to as well. Carlos and shale convince the witch to lead them back to town after they have a chance to check out the wrecked ships.

they find the wreckage easily by following the plume of smoke rising into the sky to the NE. shadows follow them there. find shadows silently picking through the wreckage. a shadow notices them, and shale threatens it. all turn and notice them, a small group attacks, the rest continue searching wreckage. after barely surviving the skirmish, the group retreats behind treeline. shadows in wreckage begin leaving with bits and bobs, identified by the carlos and the rest as magical and mundane pieces of the ships’ engines, weapons, etc. Carlos studies the shadows themselves and discovers they resist necrotic damage and are vulnerable to radiant damage – they are, at a very basic level, undead.

the group follows the large herd of shadows, which is slowly beelining to a location slightly NE of winterhaven. along the way, a powerful shadow notices them and attacks. after dispatching the shadow, they find the bit of ship it carried: an engine cog inscribed with a rune of binding.

they catch up with the shadows as they leave forest and enter large ancient keep next to lake wintermist. shadows heading to keep from lake, from winterhaven.

group decides to head to safety. shale talks their way into the walls of winterhaven, and amazingly enough into the house ghallanda inn (even with him being blacklisted). the witch avoids being recognized as the boy-eating vampire recently run out of time. shale takes captain guillermo to the jorasco healer stationed behind inn

halt informs ben he’s taking him home asap, ben knifes him, shale sets his barstool on fire, deneith guard calms them down, ben agrees to go home escorted by halt

ben and padraig go retrieve their replies at the sivis message station

ben brother, gatiss, replied with promises to lead their house in conquering the land; ben can help or get out of the way (this shed some light on the storm front cult in house lyrandar)
shale received an unexpected message from a man calling himself ‘White’ asking to speak with shale in person in the nearby city of passage (home of house orien); shale replied, “your offer is intriguing but lacks detail”; White replied that this venture could shed light on shale’s origins and could help him realize his true purpose; shale fails to reply to white message

group decides to head to stormhome by way of passage, riding skysleds created by shale’s ritual
group confronted by teleporting squad, allegedly under the employ of White, that uses shale to create a portal, allegedly to passage; reason for force used was the heroes’ known history for violence and shale’s apparent refusal to accept White’s offer

The First Step

welcome to the first step. bags over heads, taken to interrogation, tying/roughing up occurs thanks to “Black” and “Blue”.

shale meets “White”, who offers deal.

deal offered to others as well; ben offers to take penalty upon himself. NDAs signed with help from “Gold” the dwarf and “Green” the hemophobic gnome. ben deftly tricks everyone into thinking he actually signed NDA; pig somewhere far away fears for its life.

tour of the First Step

first mission is accepted: break into one of the four towers of the Arcane Congress and steal an artifact valuable to First Step research.

break-in and acquisition successful – books acquired as well.

group convinces herd of Hogwarts-style apprentice wizards that show up to scram

ben witnesses “Black” and “Blue” staying behind to plant a small eldritch machine in the tower. “White” tells group to chill out, it’s none of their business.

Guineas Pigs, Trolls, and Bears, Oh My

Carlitos emerges from one of the First Step portals dragging the body of j’Hold the Dark. j’Hold is taken to the infirmary, Carlitos is retrained.

in the morning, shale is asked about Carlitos, who vouches for him.

second mission is accepted, with promise of teleportation themed reward for shale: go to Graywall, in Droaam, and meet with “Gray” who needs them to investigate a lead. Gray can’t because Graywall is too heavy with his own Housekin.

method of travel = untested Leapfrog System of portals (series of endurance checks)

“Gray” meets them at end of painful journey, informs them of what he knows so far and about city of Graywall.

lead takes them to the location for the Goblin Market, artifact found 200 feet underground, tharashk digging crew offered to help.

tent procured from matronly troll selling pastries.

Mr. Pink wants bag of holding, finds one at wondrous item dealer, enlists Carlitos to help steal it. Mr. Pink distracts dealer by fighting him. Carlitos makes off with bags and knives. dealer summons bear with magical idol. Carlitos bribes shale to help fight bear with a flickering kukri.

bear fights valiantly, but is laid low.

In His Tomb, Ashurta Slumbers...

Padraig, Garth and Cumberbatch convince Violet to take a portal to Graywall. Cumberbatch and Violet stay back to sell pastries. Padraig is jelly. Group enters hole, one at a time. Hole feels violated and takes revenge on Shale by creating a big bullshit hole. Spelunking ensues. Pyramid is all like “I’m a fucking pyramid.” Group is like “The hell…?” Padraig is a pouty little bitch about the Skull Hole. Garth is like, “Fuck you.” and hucks Padraig’s ass down the hole. Snoogins. A door with this cryptic message

Ashurta, slayer of these weaklings, keeper of the Blade of the Ashen Crown.
Even in death, he is stoic and strong.
The might of the Dreamers has not bested him, and HeIl goes with him.

…is investigated and jimmied past with a Knock ritual. The party realizes the ruins are a Dhakaani tomb.

Stairs are fucking crazy. A room opens before the party. Letters present trouble for the adventurers. Imp attack. Silly string erupts from the poisoned Garth. Fuckin’ portal, looks a lot like Shale. Padraig and Pink look bad. pink looks worse. Like un-fucking-conscious.

Scary statues. Carlitos and Garth ride the shit out of some stone. Stone is like “Fuck that.” Ashurta is big and mean. Also scary. Balls.

Ashurta dies like a nancy bitch. Carlitos jacks sword all bitch like mid battle. Garth is pissed. Sword goes crystal, then all big and giant. A battle for box privileges arises. END.

Loot: 8 amber gems, 54 gold pieces, a simple brown belt, a skull mask, Ashurta’s Blade
